BEYOND WHAT’S POSSIBLE: DESIGNING MEANINGFUL PARTICIPATION
AI-generated ideas can make an experience look compelling before anyone has asked why a person would take part in it. A recent client brief brought that question into focus for us. Its references showed beautiful environments and ambitious interactions. As we explored them, the challenge became less about whether we could build them and more about what they would mean to the people using them.
Start With the Participant
Why would someone enter the experience? What would make them stay, explore or respond? How would their actions connect to the concept and add to the story the brand wants to tell?
These questions shape an interaction as much as its visual design or technology. An installation can work perfectly and still leave its audience unsure of what to do, or why doing it matters.
Design Beyond the Interaction
Meaningful participation depends on behaviour, motivation, timing, context and narrative. Space, technology and production give an idea its physical form, but the experience takes shape through the choices people make within it.
That means considering each moment from the participant’s point of view: what draws their attention, what invites an action and what they take away afterward.
Turning Possibility Into Purpose
AI is becoming remarkably good at showing what could exist, including fully formed concepts. It can expand the range of ideas we consider. Turning one of those possibilities into an experience still calls for a clear reason to create it and a thoughtful role for its audience.
We can keep the ambition big. The harder and more valuable work is making participation meaningful.
